Journal #2

I use Microsoft Word for my classes very often. I write almost all of my papers in Word. Especially in college, because I want to make sure that my documents are all in the same place and organized. In high school, I was once required to create a poster (similar to the newsletter for this course) in an English class for a book we were reading. This required me to use different aspects of Word that I hadn't used previously, such as adding a border and images. I have seen my teachers use MS Word to create rubrics for projects, tests, and also to create permission slips for field trips. However, it's mainly used by my teachers for creating tests and rubrics.
I have a lot of experience with copyright and fair use of materials in high school. For example, I had to give a 20 minute presentation with a presentation behind me while I spoke. In this project, part of our grade was using non-copyright sources and making sure we cited all images we took from the internet if it was a copyright image. Since it was an academic situation, I had fair use of materials. I used fair use material all throughout middle and high school, and I have continued to use it during college. I used it most recently in my newsletter when I added images from the internet to my document, which I was allowed to do because of fair use of materials. As a teacher, I would ensure that my students knew what fair use of materials is and when it is applied, this way there is no issues for the students with their work.
I will discuss solutions to academic honesty, privacy, and digital divide in this paragraph. In regards to academic honesty, I think it is important to make sure that no student plagiarizes or copies another work unfairly. It's also equally important to me that students know how to be academically honest. By this I mean that students need to be taught exactly how to cite sources both through in-text citations, a works cited, and give credit when speaking/presenting. For the teacher's role in making sure academic honesty is implemented in the classroom, I think the best way to ensure no student plagiarizes, or at least doesn't get away with it, is to submit assignments through a source like Turn It In, which checks for plagiarism and gives a percentage of material that is copied. This is important because some phrases are commonly used and that doesn't count as plagiarism, but if 75% of an assignment matches with a source, it is clear to the teacher that a student plagiarized and there must be some sort of repercussion for their actions. In regards to the digital divide, I think the best way to implement a solution is to try to have resources available, like calculators, a computer lab, laptops, etc., during the school day for students to use, and additionally, to use technology they have available to them regularly, like a phone where students can become more familiar with websites and useful apps in the field of education. While this obviously won't solve the problem completely, it will be a helpful start. Finally, the importance of privacy is growing each day. I believe that the best way to implement a solution is to ensure that students use password protected accounts, as well as teachers should give a presentation on how to improve privacy online in regards to school: having passwords for all your accounts and not posting anything that you wouldn't be okay with a parent or future employer to see. In regards to personal life: not posting inappropriate or mean comments online and presenting yourself well for the public to see to keep your privacy intact. By giving a presentation on this, it will reinforce the importance of privacy online and hopefully give students the insight and tools needed to avoid any privacy issues regarding the internet. 1. I agree with you Taylor! I love using Microsoft Word for all my assignments because of the organization benefit. It really helps once all those assignments start swarming in. On another note, I agree with your solution for academic honesty. Turn It In, helps teachers know immediately if the students plagiarized and it instills in the students motivation to do honorable work. It's great to read all your perspectives on how to tackle these issues in education. I believe this will encourage teachers to improve the learning environment for future students.
