Journal #10

I will use data collection (surveys) to get anonymous feedback from my high school students on my teaching so I can see what needs to be improved and what is good as it is. I am not sure how I will use Excel tools in my class as I plan on being an English teacher and there isn't a lot of need for a graph or table in English classes. However, I am sure I will discover a use when I begin teaching in a way I can't think of now because of a lack of experience in the field. Another way I will use surveys will be to gather information on how they feel they're progressing. To do this, I will give them a survey at the beginning of the year to see where they feel their starting point is and then compare that to the end of the first semester and at the end of the year. All surveys will be anonymous so that students will feel comfortable being honest.
I found the most interesting topics on my classmates' blogs to be things I could use myself in my specific topic of education. Specifically, since I want to teach 11th or 12th grade English, I found all the posts about OERs extremely interesting. I would love to be able to get my students access to their textbooks for free. Having as many resources available for them for free or a low cost is extremely important for me, that way we can use the money for textbooks for something more hands-on for the students. Another one I loved was an ILP on LinkedIn Learning about staying organized and getting things done. I try to stay organized, but as a teacher I know there will be so many papers, homework assignments, etc. that I will have to stay on top of so that ILP was extremely interesting to me as I know it's something I could benefit from as a teacher.
The technology-related skill I want to learn next is how to use new technologies, like 3D pens or different English apps in the classroom to make the lessons more interactive and fun for students. I want to learn about this because I feel that it is extremely important to make lessons as fun as possible to get students more involved with the learning. This kind of hands-on learning is a great way to get students more interested in the topics, which is a big part of teaching. I will achieve this goal by searching online for the best interactive English apps for high schoolers so they can have a fun way to learn the material and practice the lessons.
